PROJECT
DETAILS
The Contra
Costa Public Works Department was already too big for its building when it
retained Muller & Caulfield to project further growth needs for the next
10 to 20 years. When it became apparent that the Sheriff's Department located
on the same tract of land was also planning to expand, we urged that the sheriffs
be included in the discussion. Coordinating plans allowed us to foresee and
adapt to the combined impact on infrastructure and landscape, including a
small wetland.
Our proposed
addition picks up features like courtyards, atriums, and large shade-giving
orverhangs in a two story complex spilling down the side of the hill to the
edge of the wetland water. The addition features office spaces and a large
events room with a stunning view of Mt. Diablo.
In the
end, the members of the Public Works Department and Sherrifs Department involved
in our charette process were enthusiastic about the scheme, and impressed
by the depth of cognizance of their needs demonstrated in our report. |
