PROJECT
DETAILS
St.Joseph's
Parish in Alameda has a membership of 1750 families and serves about 1800
people at regular weekend services. The nine buildings are a mix of modern
and historic, including three landmark buildings. St Joseph's Basilica,Rectory,Convent
and Parish center, St. Joseph's Elementary School (300 students),and St. Joseph
Notre Dame High School(600 students).
The
need to define and resolve the needs expressed by several different voices
on campus as well as from the surrounding neighborhood was a primary challenge. The
high school retained Muller & Caulfield to help create a vision for the
physical growth of their school as well as the entire parish campus of three
city blocks. The Parish Master Planning Commitee was enlarged to represent
the diverse interests of the three components of the Parish (Church, High
School and Elementary School). Our issue-based design process provided form
and structure for the client group, giving each participant maximum input
in a minimum amount of time.
It quickly became obvious that the Parish needed to
nuture their relationship with the neighbourhood and the City of Alameda in
order to obtain the necessary approvals.
We helped
them set up a series of meetings as well as advising them about contacting
key individuals. We initiated the Planned Development process with the City
to gain approval for the $11,200,000 modernization to be implemented over
the next ten years.
