PROJECT DETAILS

Unitrans is the operator of bus services for the City of Davis and the University of California.  Their existing barn-like facility on the UC Davis campus includes both Operations and Vehicle Maintenance.  Due to growth and changes in equipment, additional space was needed at the facility for both maintenance  and operations.

Our programming process identified the need to almost double the size of the existing building.  However, the potential expansion of the existing site was limited, given its sensitive location next to the visitor conference center and arboretum at UC Davis.  During a four-day on-site charrette we studied the possible footprints for the expanded building, possible ways to expand the site, and the overall building layout.  With the participation of campus planners as well as the Unitrans staff we were able to quickly arrive at a solution that could work well for everyone concerned.
