ALAMEDA WEST END LIBRARY
Alameda, CA
Working closely with library staff, we provided the life safety, code compliance and ADA clearances in a tight space without reducing the number of books to be stored.

PROJECT DETAILS

Included in our City of Alameda accessibility survey of fifty city-owned properties was this 3,900 s.f., concrete WPA library. Built in 1935, the West End Library is on the City of Alameda Historical Register and is eligible for the California State Historical Register.  The City retained us to provide design, construction documents, and hazardous materials abatement coordination to bring this library up to current code.

A major issue presented by the accessibility requirements was the design of a new ramp entrance without subverting the buildingís historic integrity.  By using an adjacent unused driveway, we designed a ramp and provided a new building entrance while the remaining area of the driveway was designed to be a landscaped reading park.

Accessibility requirements will effect the layout of the reading room.  This accessibility remodel also included demolition and redesign of three existing toilet rooms to comply with current disabled accessibility requirements.
